You may have heard of melatonin and its ability to help regulate the sleep-wake cycle as well as to induce feelings of relaxation and sleepiness. What you may not know is that melatonin is a hormone produced naturally in the body and released by the pineal gland at night. It is sold over the counter and may help with the short-term treatment of insomnia due to jet lag or other occasional sleep disturbances.
