Feeling a little confused about the difference between cocoa and cacao? It's a common area of bewilderment, but the truth is they both actually come from the same plant. Simply put, cacao is cocoa in its raw, unprocessed form. Sourced from the cacao tree native to areas in Asia, South America and Africa, this popular commodity is what produces the chocolate we all know and love. However, as with most things, eating the least processed and purest version is the best way to go. Cacao has high levels of flavanols, which are plant compounds that have antioxidant properties as well as minerals such as iron, amino acids and zinc.
